If anyone has noticed this site is coming up VERY slowly. I have found there to be an issue with my hosting provider playing around with the database that runs the back end of the website. I have contacted them and so far they have not been able to give me a date as to when this issue will be resolved. All they said was something to the effect that they are upgrading the DB servers which should resolve performance. All I know is that if they keep this up much longer I am going to be looking for a new hosting provider, anyone have any good hosting providers they would recommend?

VCP

Well after a long break I finally broke down and took another certification test. After week learning from Taylor I went and sat for my VCP on VI3 test. So I am happy to report that I pasted my test, and all I can say is that it is one heck of a test. Not only does it test you on the VMware ESX product but you also have to know some networking, storage, hardware and OS performance settings. So if you are able to take the class I recommend it, after that study hard are you should have no problems with the test.

For some great study guide I recommend:

So after taking the plunge into Vista I wanted to replace notepad with notepad2. While there are many resources on how to replace it in XP I ran into a little trouble finding how to do it in Vista. Once I did find out how it was very easy.

Here are the 3 steps that are needed to replace notepad

  1. From a command line run takeown /F c:\windows\notepad.exe & takeown /F c:\windows\system32\notepad.exe
  2. After you have taken ownership of the file simply replace the permissions on the two files to give administrators “FULL CONTROL”
  3. Once you have full control on the files simply copy and paste the renamed files into c:\windows & c:\windows\system32.

That is it, enjoy using a more robust version on notepad

EPA to study data center power consumption

This is interesting considering the size of the datacenter that I work in. In fact I just finished some research on a few models of server. One was a Fujitsu PrimePower 650 the other being a Sun T2000 server.

The PP 650 an 8 processor box costs about $2k a year to run. While the T2000 an 8 core box costs about $400 a year to run. Soon we will be testing these boxes to compare the performance of each. I will post the results once we are done…..
